Slate deposits of China Until now, It was not possible to get reliable information and/or data to describe the slate of China in a serious and comprehensive manner. One reason could be the typical "Chinese issue" that they don't give away any information or are very reluctant to do so. Thus, I will give only a very very brief overview and cite here Joseph Jenkins from his "Slate Roof Bible": "There are numerous sources of slate in China, including the following provinces: Hebei, Hubei, Jiangxi, Shaanxi, Yunnan and Sichuan. Much of the export market originates from Hebei, which is the province that includes Beijing. Beijing slate from Men Tou Gou has reportedly been used for roofing for over 500 years. Most of the production is now exported for flooring and walls as well as roofing. The color varies from black to blackgray to purple, green, and jade green. The green slate from Fang Shan is very popular, especially for use in billiards tables.
