Investigation of the fabric
The fabric of slate can be studied by means of a light microscope to figure out the main features. The investigation of the fabric within a scale of a few micrometers (100 µm = 0,1 mm = 0,003937 in.) is carried out by means SEM ('Scanning Electron Microscopy'). By using this method one can investigate more deeply in the fabric of a slate and therefore distinguish between continuous and spaced fracture cleavage.
